Me and my girlfriend will be traveling for a month in Iran this summer

Question:

Me and my girlfriend will be traveling for a month in Iran this summer. We are not married. Do you know how hard/easy/complicated it can be when looking for a room in hotels or when taking the night train ? I really dont know what to expect... Is it better to pretend that we are married or can we openly tell that we are an unmarried couple ( if asked) ? Are there any obvious mistakes to avoid in such context ?

Answer:

It has two sides:
1. In local people point of view: It is better and recommended to pretend that you are married or at least are engaged. It doesn't mean they will make problems for you but it is because of the dominant values and code of ethics of the country.
2. In the authorities and hotels point of view: There is no need to pretend anymore to be married, you will easily be checked in a shared room and no one will disturb you.
